Garmont Introduces New Tech Inserts For 2011 Alpine Touring Boots

GARMONT introduces new proprietary Tech Inserts in 2011 ALPINE TOURING BOOTS

A major innovator in alpine touring boots, Garmont is pleased to introduce its own proprietary “Tech Inserts” for fall 2010.

Since introducing the Tech system in its alpine touring boots in 2000, Garmont has exclusively featured Dynafit-manufactured Tech Inserts.   The program was hugely successful, as the combination of Garmont performance and Dynafit binding compatibility provided exceptional results for lightweight ski touring.

With the January 1, 2010 expiration of Dynafit’s patent on the design, Garmont has embraced the opportunity to bring a superior Tech Insert to the marketplace:  one that is specifically manufactured to support the increasing number of skiers turning to the system for aggressive freeride performance as well as lighter ski touring.

“We chose to develop our own Tech Insert as soon as we could, knowing that we could improve upon the quality and consistency of the current product,” said Paul Parker, Garmont Ski product manager    ”We feel that elevating the standard for Tech Inserts is essential, as the use of alpine touring systems has rapidly evolved from predominately light touring to aggressive freeride skiing.”

The new Garmont Tech Inserts are the culmination of two years of research and product development and extensive field testing.  Built from the highest quality die-cast steel alloy, the material construction of Garmont Tech Inserts has been meticulously researched, tested, and proven to be equal or superior to all other inserts on the market today.

Garmont’s proprietary Tech Insert design is based on the “Standard Insert” template, clearly the most robust and versatile option available.  A primary benefit of the “Standard Insert” over the “Quick Step-In” design is additional room for more sole rubber — providing better abrasion resistance in a zone which is particularly vulnerable in a rigid-sole boot, while still satisfying the ISO Touring norm.  The “Standard Insert” is also smooth-sided, as the ISO Touring Norm calls for no protrusions beyond the sides of the sole for full compatibility with step-in bindings.

In Garmont’s design, the thickness and perimeter for the Tech Insert’s fixation are identical to the well-proven “Standard Insert” to assure optimum retention. The “cones” of the interface have been improved as well, with thicker material adding more durability.

The new Tech Inserts will be guaranteed by Garmont, based on rigorous testing for life-cycle durability, safety and performance, using machinery and testing procedures that far exceed all anticipated industry standards. The Garmont testing procedure was established early in the product development process, with the development of a proprietary testing machine: “Hannibal 2”.   Unlike conventional tests, Hannibal 2 operates both in transverse and longitudinal axes with an elliptical motion that better simulates the imperfect nature of a walking stride.  The machine loads the toe of the boot with 150 Kg to simulate the additional stresses of freeride skiing. During the walking motion Hannibal’s excessive pre-load more than doubles the 100,000-cycle life-cycle test as, unlike walking, the insert is loaded during both the forward and rearward motion.

Garmont Tech Inserts will be available for 2011 in all Garmont Tech-compatible ski mountaineering boots.

McLean and Garre Head to Alaska for ‘Spring Break’

2_image0052

Just when everyone else is heading to Sayulita to avoid the spring mud fest, Andrew McLean and Kip Garre head north to Alaska, separately, but of the same mind: To find deep snow and ski big lines.

Andrew’s Hot Spot: Wrangell-Saint Elias & the Revelations

Andrew spent the last week in the Wrangell-Saint Elias National Park and Preserve calling in via SAT phone to give us his daily snow and ski report. Check out his daily dispatches from Week #1 here. Andrew’s been skiing and touring a lot, but there’s something new every day including an impromptu, lunch-time wedding at Iceberg Lake. The wedding was celebrated with another run and a 4,000-ft vertical descent.

Week #2 has just begun. Listen in as Andrew meets up with fellow Mountain Hardwear athlete Noah Howell for some “spring skiing” in the Revelation Mountains in the Alaska Range.

Kip Takes a Trip to Mt. Hunter (Denali’s southern neighbor)

Kip is off to the Alaska Range as well, but his aim is to climb and ski Mt. Hunter, Denali’s neighbor eight miles to the south. You can expect a full report upon his return, but in the meantime, get to know Kip a little better with this recent Q and A: http://www.doglotion.com/skier-interview-ski-mountaineer-kip-garre

Rossignol’s Rosalind Groenewoud (Roz G) has been named the 2010 AFP (Association of Freeskiing Professionals) Overall Women’s Champion for the second year in a row. Roz had an impressive results year in both halfpipe and slopestyle, edging out Dania Assaly in 2nd and Sarah Burke in 3rd.

Roz had a strong year in Superpipe competitions, with 4 podiums including one X-Games and Euro X-Games. It was those four podiums that placed Roz 2nd in the AFP Superpipe rankings. In slopestyle Roz finished strongly in 8th place in the AFP rankings. Where skiers are mostly specializing in their competition disciplines, Roz has been successful in both disciplines of women’s competition.

“We here at Rossignol could not be more excited for Roz, she trains harder then any other girl out there, and no one is more devoted to the park and pipe competition scene” says Matt Rihm, Rossignol’s Team Manger. “Roz was just named to our international team this year, she clearly deserves the spot!”

Roz skis on Rossignol’s S4 Jib. The S4 has won more X-Games medals than any other ski out there. The S4 has a rebound tip and a rubber layer between the sidewalls and edge to absorb shocks and increase durability when landing large airs. The WRS (weight reduction system) concept makes it a super lightweight jib ski. The award winning twin-tip rips in the pipe, park and all-mountain.

Grand Targhee Resort Receives Sustainable Slopes Grant from National Ski Area Association
Funds will be used to implement water filling stations at the resort

(Alta, WY – April 28, 2010)  The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) today named Grand Targhee Resort as one of five member ski areas to receive funding through its annual Sustainable Slopes Grant program<http://www.nsaa.org/nsaa/press/0910/ss-grants.asp>.  The grants, also sponsored by California energy bar maker CLIF Bar & Co<http://www.clifbar.com/>., and the Natural Resources Defense Council<http://www.nrdc.org/> (NRDC), are designed to spark innovation among NSAA member resorts and provide resorts additional resources to initiate sustainability projects.

“These grants are a great vehicle for not only implementing new green projects at U.S. ski areas, but also to encourage the sharing of information of successful environmental programs and practices among our member resorts,” says NSAA President Michael Berry.

Grand Targhee Resort plans to use the Sustainable Slopes Grant to add water bottle refilling stations at the base of the resort for the 2010/11 winter season.

“We are very grateful to NSAA, CLIF Bar and the NRDC for their commitment to the Sustainable Slopes Program,” said Christina Thomure, director of sustainable operations, Grand Targhee Resort.  “This grant will allow us to implement water refilling stations to help us diminish the use of disposable plastic water bottles at Grand Targhee Resort.”

Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort Extends Season

The Longest Ski Season in its History: Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard
Resort Extends the Ski Season into May 2010

Las Vegas (April 27, 2010) -Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort (LVSSR)
announced that its 2009/10 season will be extended by an additional
week through Sunday, May 2. Recently scheduled to close on Sunday,
April 25, the new closing date marks the longest season in the
resort’s 47-year history. Historically, the resort would close during
the second week of April. During the extended season, three of the
area’s four lifts will operate daily from 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and all
2009/10 LVSSR season passes will be honored. Skier shuttle services
will also operate under regular ski-season hours.  As added
incentives, pass holders from any ski resort in the United States can
present a valid 2009/10-season pass and I.D. to receive an Adult All-
day lift ticket for $25, a 50 percent savings.  The resort’s Facebook
fans will also receive deeply discounted rates on All-day lift tickets.

Due to an early snowfall, LVSSR kicked off the 2009/10
season on Wednesday, October 7, seven weeks earlier than its
traditional Thanksgiving Day opening. Currently, the area reports a
record late season snow base of 60 inches; its average closing week
base is 24 inches. To date, the total annual snowfall for the area
checks in at 216.5 inches, which is more than a four-foot increase
over the 2008/09 season; the annual average is 120 inches.

Also showing a gain is the resort’s number of annual
skier visits. This number is up by 28 percent this year over the
previous season’s numbers. Despite the highly publicized economic
hardships both locally in Las Vegas and throughout Nevada, Craig
Baldwin, LVSSR’s base operation’s manager says that the economy is as
much of a reason for the resort’s success as is the plentiful snowfall.

This year’s El Nino weather pattern has heavily
influenced the snowfall in the Southwest U.S.; due to the high-level
snowpack in the Spring Mountain National Recreation Area, LVSSR is the
only resort in Nevada to extend its season.
